The Interview

1. What are you working on now?

Now I am working on a middle grade novel called Plan B. It is a companion novel to Room 42 and it follows two boys on a road trip across six states. They may or may not get into a lot of trouble.

2. How do you select the names of your characters?

When I think of a character, they usually come into my imagination along with a letter from the alphabet. Then I think of a name that starts with that letter. If nothing comes to me, I'll look up popular baby names that start with that letter and go down the list until I find something that clicks with the character's personality.

3. As a child, what did you wish to become when you grew up?

I wanted to be a farmer. My parents used to take me to a petting zoo and there was this one goat I liked to visit. I like to think that it liked me too. I have no idea if it really did. Maybe it was friendly to everyone. Anyway, I decided I wanted to be a farmer when I grew up so that I could have a goat.

4. What are your pet peeves?

When authors use the word "giggle" excessively in a novel. I don't know why, but it drives me crazy.

5. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

I usually skim them quickly because sometimes if there is a well-written line, I'll ask the reviewer if I can quote them on my website. Aside from that, I try not to think about them too much.

6. Name 2 things you consider yourself to be very bad at.

Reading lips: When someone is mouthing something to me from across the room, I say "What?" repeatedly until they give up. And spelling. Yay for spell check.
